Off Track Qualifications

Individuals who wish to work in a purely non-track based environment have a pathway specifically designed for their needs. This pathway is for those coaches who work exclusively with athletes training for road running, fell, cross country or multi terrain events.

There are two main qualifications within this route:

Leadership in Running Fitness

Coach in Running Fitness

The Leadership in Running Fitness Award is designed to prepare you as a leader where your responsibility will be to provide a safe and enjoyable running experience for athletes over the age of 12.

On successful completion of the one-day attendance only course you will be licensed and insured to lead groups of adults in running activities taking place away from the club premises. If leading runners between the ages of 12-18 the leader must be under the supervision of a Coach in Running Fitness.

Looking ahead, this award will be accepted as a prerequisite for the subsequent Coach in Running Fitness Coach Award.

The Coach in Running Fitness Award looks to extend the knowledge attained in the Leadership in Running Fitness Award (LiRF). Hence, to be eligible for this award, candidates must hold a valid LiRF award. To accommodate those moving into off-track endurance from a different pathway anyone holding an old UKA Level 1 award or higher or an Athletics Assistant award is also eligible.

The Coach in Running Fitness Award explores the broad applications to non-track based endurance running events, rather than specific events or distances. Please note, the CiRF programme is not designed for coaches who wish to work with runners taking part in endurance events such as 800m-10,000 or steeplechase on the track.

On successful completion of the four-day attendance only days (three practical days and one day of formal assessment) Coaches in Running Fitness will be licensed to coach in an unsupervised environment.
